Everywhere, Really?

Kyle and I had a skype date. He was at the ever popular Starbucks on base. It is frequented by many of the US soldiers for many reasons but for Kyle he says its the best Wifi he's found. We are chatting it up when I ask him, "What's that on your lap?" response, "my gun." YOU TAKE YOUR GUN INTO STARBUCKS! Yep. Kyle explained that there is really no where he doesn't take it. This started a series of questions. Do you take it to the..and the...Yes, Kathy. Everywhere. It is permitted and encouraged to have on your person at all times.

I can't imagine enjoying my grande soy chai tea latte with multiple loaded guns in my local coffee shop. Thank God, I was born in America.

It's a small world after all

Kyle is from a small town in Wisconsin. A backwoods boy from a high school that is population small. However, despite the limited number of attendees Kyle still seems to run into fellow alum frequently. Like say, overseas. What are the chances! Pictured here is Kyle with his high school alum, Brian. It really is a small world.

Half Marathon #2

After a long running event like a half marathon, some people decide to take a few days off. Let their body recover and take a well deserved rest. This is not what Kyle, Corey and another solider from their sister ballation decided to do. They discovered that another half marathon was taking place two days after the initial one and signed up. CRAZY!
Kyle finished and was glad he participated. He reports some soreness in his legs but overall feels pretty good.

It's not a sprint...its a marathon

The British troops put on a half marathon to raise money for their veterans program. They invited US troops to participate. Kyle, his friend Corey and others from their ballation joined the fundraiser run. Kyle finished the 13.1 mile jaunt in one hour and fifty-two minutes. He finished second in his group of US soldiers under the age of 29 years old and was awarded a medal for his achievements. Some of the scenery from the run photographed here, a camel, a car in the distance and lots and lots of sand.

How we met our neighbors

Kyle and I became homeowners for the first time one year ago almost today. It was exciting! We couldn't wait to get to know the area and the other residents. Some people meet their neighbors at a BBQ or when walking to the mailbox or even when they need to borrow the ever popular cup of sugar. This is not how we met our neighbors.

It was the day of the city's airshow and Kyle and I had been invited to watch the show from a sailboat, heck yeah! We both put our cell phones under the boat deck and enjoyed the amazing aerial spectacle. Hours later we docked back at the harbor and were walking to our car when I glanced at my phone. Panic struck. 18 missed calls. And worse, all phone numbers I didn't recognize. I thought, this is not good. Just as I was about to listen to my voicemail, my phone rang again. "Kathy, its your neighbor. Don't worry everything is ok." WHAT! WHAT'S OK? WHAT HAPPENED!

We noticed earlier in the week, while the airshow was practicing for the event that Simba wasn't loving the noise. Not to complain, because I LOVE the airshow, but regardless of your location in the city, it's loud and buildings shake from floor to ceiling with most of these aircrafts.

On the day of the event I left our second story kitchen window opened about 4 inches. Apparently, Simba pushed the window opened enough to crawl out. Pushing the screen out just enough to jumped two stories behind the house. Landing without injury to the driveway. Several neighbors saw this. Several came to make sure he was ok and many took great care of him until Kyle and I returned home. Some neighbors got my phone number off Simba's collar, others from the association call list and some called from the gate phone and left messages on our house machine. Our favorite message went something like this, "This is your neighbor and we just saw your dog jump out the window. We thought maybe he was trying to get you help. Are you ok?" Simba is a smart dog but he is no Lassie.

To this day, I don't leave any windows open when Simba is home alone. And I still see unknown neighbors that say hi to the "Dog that jumped out the second story window".

Kuwait Happenings

Kyle called today:) It was surf and turf for dinner. Crab legs with plastic silverware, doesn't really work out all that well. The soldiers were pulling out their pocket knives to eat. Kind of gross. What else have the knives been used for? They even had sparkling grape juice to top it off. Fancy!

Kyle has passed his Kuwaiti driving test. He is now licensed to drive cars, vans and buses in Kuwait. And probably camels too...

Despite his ankle injury and the advice of medical professional, including myself (I'm practically an Internet doctor by now!),Kyle will be running in a Kuwait city half marathon this weekend. Good luck running partner!

Starbucks, Really?

Kyle's temporary living quarters in Kuwait pictured here. A tent with several hundred cots in it. Similar to his temporary resiedence in Florida while training in January. Kyle's cot, with his makeshift "desk" which is just his ruck sack half emptied and his computer placed on top of it. Although most comforts from home aren't evident, Kyle did find one home luxury while walking yesterday. Photographed here is a Kuwaiti Starbucks!

Being silly together...my favorite

Photos from last weekend. We took our waterproof camera for a swim (best camera ever!) This one is completely unflattering but makes me laugh, so I thought I would share. And one with the Easter Bunny too!

Moving Day

Most of Kyle's equipment was shipped overseas last week. The rest of his things will fly over with him. He will be weighed in today. His luggage and person can't weigh more than 400lbs.
A large amount of our communication happens via photos. I will take a picture with my phone or camera of what I'm doing on a particular day and email with a short text description and he will do the same.
For example, yesterday he was packing up his things and wrote "standing in my ruck sack in an effort to pack." After I requested a visual, these pictures followed.

Do you have a direct flight?

Kyle had his four day pass this week before his trip to the 'Rack'. It was great, doing all of our favorite things:) Having fun and being silly the way you are with only your person. Lots of laughs and sad when it ended.

Kyle flies overseas this weekend. He leaves at 6am from Texas to Oklahoma, then to Rockford, then to Canada and then to Iceland, followed by a stop in Germany and finally to Kuwait. This route, with layovers included, will take almost a full 48 hours. Kyle will be in Kuwait for a few days before flying to Baghdad. This flight plan has yet to be determined but I imagine they will want to make four or five stops along the way...just kidding. I think.

I will be sure to post Kyle's new address once its available. The Texas address should not be used anymore.

Vote NO on Painting-- as Democrates say: "vote early, vote often!"

I have to relate Kathy's painting prowess (or lack thereof) so that you can make the right choice on the poll. If you already voted, no worries-- just vote again as a guest.

About two years ago, when we first moved to Chicago, Kathy desperately wanted to paint the small two bedroom condo we'd rented. Even though the lease did not allow it, I said go ahead-- so long as Kathy painted the walls back to white when we moved out. Kathy moved down and started painting almost a week before me. When I arrived, the 1300 square foot place was still no where near done. What's worst, Kathy decided she only liked to paint the center of the walls and not the edges becase they were no fun. At least she had painted over all of the painter's tape she had laid- which I had to scape off with a razor blade because the paint had dried over it days earlier. The only room that was completed was one of the bathrooms-- painted a deep blue to signify that it was the only bathroom boys could use. Of course the only reason it was complete is because our friend Deanne had done it. If not for Deanne, Anni, my sister, and unfortunately my help, the place never would have been painted.

When it came time to move out a year and a half later, Kathy refused to have any hand in repainting the walls white. When she finally agreed to live up to her promise, I came home to find the bathroom and front hallway a gleaming, bright white. Kathy had painted all of those walls using the door frame trim paint. Eventually, I had to hire a gang of professionals to come in and paint on the day we moved out-- it took them only about 4 hours. Kathy swore up and down through out the experience that she was never going to paint anything other than her nails again. Help her keep her word this time, vote Heck NO to painting.

*The author reserves the right to veto any painting project regardless of the results of this poll, and comments herein are not to be construed in any as an agreement to abide by the results of any such poll.

To Paint or not to paint

I have FINALLY decided on colors for the guest bedrooms and really want to paint before the new carpet is installed. This makes sense, right? Well, I floated the idea by Kyle and he strongly disagreed.
At our last place I was experimenting with the whole painting thing, trying to discover my inner interior decorator. It is not as easy as it looks. The taping and prep work, ugh! I am far from a professional and in addition to be less than skilled at it, I didn't enjoy the task at all. However, painted walls and color in a home really do make all the difference to me.
Kyle remembers what happened last time and well, I can't blame him for not wanting me to do it in his absence, I think overall it is the correct order of events. Paint then carpet.
A poll------>

Birthdays (part 2)

Lists. I make them constantly. Lists for grocery shopping, gift ideas for Birthdays/Christmas, things for our home...they are everywhere. In my purse, on the fridge, on post-its throughout our home. Lists, lists, lists.

Its Kyle's Birthday weekend. And I wish he was here, to celebrate with, to watch him open the surprises wrapped and bowed for him...This year's birthday was a little tricky. What is on a soldier's Birthday list? What could I get Kyle that would be needed and wanted for his mobilization? It was a struggle but I felt happy with the gift list I assembled, and hopefully he will too:)

I've come to learn that the really important lists, are not the ones with things on them. They are the lists of actions that lift Kyle's spirits, the ones that make him laugh and smile and using this list as often as possible. The lists of actions that makes him upset or angry and avoiding these. The ones that make him crazy and using these at just the right moments. These lists are the only ones I really need to know.

Happy Birthday, Kyle!

Yes, we are both BIG nerds

An exchange of emails:

Kyle writes:

Dear acting CFO,

Request initial funds allocation for one pair of leather personnel carries (boots). Allocation required: $XXX in Q2. Estimated life of asset, 10 years. Additional maintenance funds requirement projected as no more than 25-30 dollars per quarter over the life of the asset for socks and other foot comfort supplies.

Kathy replies:

Dear Sir,

Your request has been submitted and will be reviewed by the board at the next meeting of the minds. You will be notified shortly and thank you for your submission. Please be further advised that the CEO will be strongly lobbying for new carpet in Q2 which may delay your and all other additional Q2 requests.
